tech: update to RAW vs. JPEG

April 29, 2008 – 6:32 pm

Full-sized images have been added to the previous post so you can better compare RAW vs. JPEG. Now if you click on one of the small photos a full-sized image will open in a new browser window (except for the little detail shots, they are just sampled from the full-sized images you’ll be downloading prior). I will mention that the files are large, 3 - 6 MB or so each. Lots of detail to view.

I’ll also mention that since RAW Canon CR2 files won’t readily show in a web browser, I first converted the uncorrected RAW files to JPEG (but with no corrections applied). For all practical purposes I don’t think this will create a huge difference. I think the practical results really lie in the corrected images. If you’re using Firefox (highly recommended) you can click two photos and they will each open in separate tabs. The images are downsized for viewing automatically by Firefox, to fit in the browser. Click on each image in the same spot with your cursor and voilá, you can toggle back and forth, comparing the same locations at full size.

I truly appreciate your comments, I depend on them to help keep improving prophotolife. It’s sometimes hard to bring all the information I’d like to within the confines of a regular blog format. If anyone has elegant solutions or easier ways of presenting this information, please let me know. If you’ve seen any great ways other sites handle this information please send a link this way, I always like to contact other sites and discuss how we can all do things better and work together.

Keep letting me know what things look like from that side of the fence!

Thanks, Jim T.
