around the net, volume 4
May 9, 2008 – 12:01 amWow, what a week. Looking back at the ground we covered the past few days I hope no one minds if I keep the info light this Friday. We’ve both earned a break from learning so let’s just sort of ease into the weekend, maybe even grab an hour or two on the bicycle this afternoon. Of course, you know I’m already thinking about next week and Monday’s video.
Last week there were a number of visitors coming over from Digital Pro Talk (specifically checking out the post “how much photographers make“) so I looked them up. It turns out the blog is written by David Ziser, the highly respected wedding photographer and photo educator. David is a true master of the medium, his work is beautiful and timeless and the blog offers tons of tips (over 1000 posts!) on digital photography, Photoshop and Lightroom. It also turns out that David is located about 30 miles away from the studio, a genuine neighbor.
We talked quite a bit on the phone today about the internet, the business of photography and some of the good people located around the ‘net. Speaking of good people, David also turned me on to a couple of super-informative websites, Epic Edits (quality photo information pulled from everywhere) and 1001 Noisy Cameras (look at all those links!). I really look forward to diving into all of their information.
Have you ever visited Makezine.com? The website (and slick magazine available on newsstands) is an amazing resource for anyone into DIY. The projects are diverse and some of them are really incredible. Well, they picked up the prophotolife pinhole camera video from this past Monday and featured it on their site. Right below it is a link to a pinhole camera made from a pinenut (!?). A month or so ago, makezine.com also ran the first DIY lighting video (stick-in-a-can) that I put together. Imagine if we could get all of those backyard inventors to collectively tackle the world’s problems…
Tech lovers take note: NormMonkey sent a note this week on the conclusion of his battle of the bulbs research: “I’ve added a follow-up post with info on strobe light spectra“. I’m thankful for this research, especially this latest strobe light info. There may be days I reach for an incandescent bulb instead of a strobe, as a result.
Monday’s upcoming video will fill a request from a reader, a bit of a primer on the photo studio before we begin some other planned video lessons. I’m also excited about next week’s feature on a photographer who is the definition of self-motivation and selflessness, a true photographic inspiration.
Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday…
- Jim T.

You keep mentioning the “iced tea fund”. Do you like it Southern, super-saturated syrup style, or un-sweetened? Just curious.

I jumped upon reading “iced tea” in your comment, that’s how embarrassingly hooked I am. Make it large with little ice, unsweetened and with a twist of lemon. McAlister’s Deli uses jumbo Lipton tea bags so it’s nothing exotic…but it’s “oh, so right”.

Hehe. I enjoy it too, but I’ve had to cut back on my caffine. I do try to sneak a glass in every once in awhile, although I know I’ll pay for it later.
Keep up the good work on the blog here. It’s one of my favorites to read.
