around the net: volume 7

May 30, 2008 – 12:30 am

It’s been another busy week at prophotolife / Daylight Photo. Last weekend’s shoot was great fun, we photographed an actor / comedian as 16 different characters. Once I get client approval I’ll share the images here. This week I’ve also been putting together the video for Monday, it’s a real hands-on shooting technique video. If you are interested in portraiture I think you’ll really enjoy it.

Here’s a reminder: have you entered the At My Home Photo Contest over at DIYPhotography.net yet? I just checked out the current submissions and they range from fun to very touching. Udi recently posted a brief Q & A on the contest.

I’m a big fan of U.S. television interviewer, Charlie Rose. He has spoken with a number of important photographers over the years, including Sally Mann, Mary Ellen Mark, Roy DeCarava (a personal favorite) and the master of the decisive moment, Henri Cartier-Bresson. Below is a recollection of iconic fashion photographer Richard Avedon taped shortly after his death in 2004. Actually, to call Avedon just a fashion photographer short-changes the variety of work he created over six decades. Be forewarned, this is a full-length video, 33 minutes in all (subscribers, video is available on website). If you don’t have time for it now you can always refer back or at least bookmark his television show website in order to see a plethora of wonderful interviews with famous photographers. Just do a search on “photographer” once you get there…

It’s funny how using a global medium like the internet helps connect us to people in our own neighborhood. This week’s around the ‘net takes a look at some things happening close to home. Am I just fortunate to be in southwestern Ohio or is there this much photo activity going on everywhere?

I’ve heard from a number of members of the Ohio Valley Camera Club, they’ll be stopping by for the prophotolife get-together on June 10. If you’re near the Cincinnati, Ohio, area drop me a line if you can join us. I’m really looking forward to meeting readers and hope you can make it.

Another local event is a Strobist meetup happening in Columbus, OH, on July 28. It’s in the Brewery District in a 70,000 square foot haunted warehouse…talk about photo opportunities! These events are going on everywhere, it seems, and I missed a recent one here in Cincinnati. No matter where you’re located, there are sure to be some other Strobist enthusiasts ready and willing to get together. Indianapolis photographer Paul D’Andrea brought the Columbus event to my attention through his blog (where he also shares tech info and personal insights on photography).

After hearing from Paul, I contacted Noah Hutson who is helping to organize the meetup. I’ll definitely be there in Columbus, video camera in hand, to help record the fun and education and share it with prophotolife viewers both near and far. So no matter where you’re located, we’ll be bringing the event to you (or at least a bit of it). Noah is also an excellent commercial photographer, by the way, and has a beautiful website.

And if you are into photographic lighting, the biggest news this week is that David Hobby at Strobist.com has just released a multi-DVD instructional video set (see this announcement for photos and a video sample). It’s a guaranteed best seller and sure to be a must-have for anyone using portable strobe lighting.

That’s it for now, I hope it’s been a good week for you, too. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday…
