coming up in Monday’s video: building a three light portrait

June 7, 2008 – 12:00 pm

In last week’s video we saw three different styles of one light portraits. I love one light portraits and there are photographers that have based their entire career on this style of lighting. Personally, I think it’s important to understand what just one light can do before moving on. But if you’re ready to move on…what if we add a hair light? And a background light? In Monday’s video we do just that, and build a three light portrait around our model:

from one light to three light portrait

    2. You’re going to get me in trouble with my wife! It’s bad enough I have a shopping list a mile long, including a 10-20mm lens, 28-135mm IS, Genesis 200 kit… Now you’re going to show me how to add two more lights to the one I don’t even have yet?

If my wife knew how to do it, she’d block sites like Pro Photo Life from my computer!

    3. Oh, suuuuure…blame it on me. ;)

Just offer to do yearly portraits of the extended family. Setting up your own studio is a great way to both stay connected with family and provide professional photos that will be cherished by generations to come.

(is this working? am I getting anywhere? let me know if we hit on the right formula, we can bottle it and sell it!)

    4. We’ll see how it works. I’ll go give it a try now!

I set your status as friend in my Flickr account. If you go through my photos now, you’ll see that my portrait studio is my back yard mostly and the living room as there is a great deal of sun light that comes through the windows.
